Minutes of the Greater Castle Rock Art Guild

August 21, 2008

As a pre-meeting special special treat, member Sally Crain-Jaeger - who delighted us with her presentation a few months ago -  delivered a number of her earlier works to give away as part of her upcoming move to Santa Fe, N.M., and GCRAG members had a chance to select a favorite.  Most were canvases 30 x 40 inches on carpenter-made stretchers, with heavy-duty bracing, made at the university where she taught for 20 years. .  Though these are special to her, she decided she had to let them go.  Julie Holladay arranged to receive 10 works for Castle View High School classes, but another 35 or so were available!  Though Sally says the canvases could be painted over ....an original by Sally is a treasure, even if they are her earlier works.

Dix began the meeting with a welcome to all and introduction of visitors.  Minutes were approved as posted on line.  We will no longer post the Treasurer's Report because of  Internet  concerns, but the report will be made quarterly at Board of Directors meetings.

GCRAG is two years old now and the two-year terms of all our officers expired.  The nominating committee provided the following slate of candidates:

Officers:

President - Dix Morris
Vice President & Co-president - Tina Nordloh
Co-president (and web assistant) - Rebecca Thompson
Treasurer - Tammy DeBakey
Secretary - D.Ann Schneider
Membership - Anne Buell
Reporter - Tamara Culp
Webmaster - Sheri McAdoo

Committee Chairs:
Sales - Jack Belden
Refreshments - Faye Stefan
Community Displays - Dieter Loose
Exhibits - Colette Brooks and Nadine Partridge
Workshops - Lori Beckman
Scholarships - Rosie Lohnert

Dix also recognized our unofficial calligrapher, Evette Goldman and all the help provided by Steve Smith, Ed Allen and Fritz Anders and passed out small gifts to all involved.

The new GCRAG Gallery will be at 240 Wilcox - across from the South East corner of the Wilcox Bldg (known as the former courthouse location).  The Gallery will provide a reception area, three conference rooms and a rectangular hallway in which to display art.  Some painting and other work remains in preparation of the opening of the Gallery, and volunteers were asked  to help Friday through Sunday.

The grand opening will be September 4th from 4:30  to 7:30.   Mimi Platte is coordinating the opening reception.  The reception area will need to be manned Fridays, Saturdays and possibly Sundays by GCRAG members.  Dieter Loose will work up a schedule with contributing artists who are displaying in each two-month round.  Members who want to display art in the gallery should submit a CD with photographs of their work to Dieter.  Display costs per artist will average a total of $10 each for  the 'two-month display'.  Payment will be due on delivery of the art.  Dieter will coordinate the delivery schedule.  Dieter1@live.com

The evening's program was presented by art-marketing consultant Alyson B. Stanfield author of I’d Rather Be in the Studio! The Artist’s No-Excuse Guide to Self-Promotion. Whether you’re a sculptor, painter, metal smith, photographer, glass artist, fiber artist, or woodworker, I’d Rather Be in the Studio! teaches how to take advantage of traditional self-promotion techniques, as well as how to expand into Internet marketing. She emphasized use of internet tools such as Facebook and emphasized the importance of developing and using your mailing list.  To read more about Alyson and the book, visit  http://www.artbizcoach.com
There will be an encaustic workshop on September 10 and Art in the Park was announced for Aug 23-24 in downtown Parker.
Tina Nordloh, Byung Wha Lee, and Ann Charlott Denslow shared recent art work they have completed.
The next  meeting of GCRAG will be held at the Philip S. Miller Library on September 18. Members are invited to bring a recent creation or a work of art you want to show the members.

July 17, 2008

The meeting was opened by Dix with a welcome to all and special recognition of visitors and new members.  Members were reminded that to have artwork displayed at GCRAG sponsored venues, a CD of available work should be sent to Dieter Loose.

Discussion of a possible GCRAG gallery:

1) 240 Wilcox for $50 per month.  Nineteen artists signed up indicating their desire to participate in a Gallery project.  2) Dix and Helene are to meet with another possible location. Will report more at next meeting. The organization would need to obtain Liability insurance before any more events are held. A sign-up sheet was sent around to indicate interest in participating in the gallery.

American Family Insurance will supply the necessary liability insurance for $183.00 per year. A vote on the liability insurance was called for and passed unanimously.  It was suggested that additional insurance by each artist as a homeowner’s rider would protect the artwork itself.

Guest:

Judy Patti, who has a studio, at 5849 S. Broadway was introduced by Dix. Judy spoke about an upcoming workshop offered by Frank Francese, 8/1-8/3. She also outlined possible available opportunities for workshops and classes at the studio.

Minutes of the Greater Castle Rock Art Guild

May 15, 2008

President Dix Morris brought the meeting to order.  Minutes and the treasurer's report were approved as posted on the web.

The first Dancing Under the Stars starts June 21.  They will set up tents for free. The theme will be Hawaiian.  Dancing Under the Stars will continue every third Saturday through October.

Tina reported on Art Walk plans for June 14.  Set-up will begin at 8:30.  Castle Rock will be unveiling their new sculpture that afternoon and would like to have a few artists set up in Festival Park after the Art Walk.  It would be good to have at least one project where kids can participate.  Let Tina know if you are available - 303-284-4755.  Also, those participating should let Jack know so he can arrange the sales tax information.

Rosie reported on plans for GCRAG tent at the Farmers' Market.  Set-up is at 7:30 and the market will close around 1:00.  Rosie has a tent to borrow.  There was discussion that we might consider using some of our grant for supplies to buy a tent for the guild.  A motion was made, seconded and approved to spend up to $250 for a tent.

The Littleton Music Fest, June 27 - 29, at Aspen Grove is looking for a painter.  They charge $250 per booth.

"Lines into Shapes" will be held September 19 - October 15 in Estes Park.  There is a July 15 deadline.  More information is at www.artcenterofestes.com and on the GCRAG web under announcements.  There is a $13 fee per entry and a limit of 3 entries.

Griffith Art on the Farm at Dark Star Farm in Franktown has room for about ten artists.  For more information, call Barb Ritchie at 303-237-6865 x12.

The nominating committee is working on a slate of officers and are having a difficult time finding a candidate for president.  They are considering breaking the office up and creating two co-presidents, one for exhibits and one for fund-raising.

Lee Ann Reynolds gave the evening's program.  She told us of how her struggle with cancer taught her how precious her art is and gave her a "kick in the butt" to get moving with her painting.  She discussed use of warm and dark shades of the colors she uses and use of opposite color washes to block out large areas as she starts each painting.  She had several of her beautiful landscapes to pass around. You can find more information on Lee Ann on her website - www.leeannreynolds.com

Ken Pederson brought a stunning painting of icelandic poppies painted in his unique "backward" method on non-glare plexiglass.  The painting was unmounted and really displayed his method.

Brag a bit concentrated on the mask project (www.maskproject.com or .org - no one was sure) which several guild members participated in and which will be on display at Cherry Creek Mall.  Current bidding for the masks can be seen on the web site. Yourhub.com also has an article.

Members also reported on openings and shows.

The next meeting will be on the third Thursday of June at the Philip S Miller Library.

April 17, 2008

President Dix Morris called the meeting to order at 6:30.  New members and visitors were introduced.

Upcoming Events
-  Plans for the June 14 Art Walk were discussed.  At 9 that same morning there will be dedication of a statue in Festival Park.  This could be a good lead-in to our Art Walk on the courthouse lawn later that day.
-  May 3 will be the Spring up the Creek.   We will have a tent and offer use of pastels to make note cards to youngsters.
-  We will have a tent at the Farmers Market from July to September.  The market is being moved to 2nd Street this year and plans are being made for a loading zone and for offering shoppers help in carrying their purchases back to their cars.  We have received a $500 grant to help pay for supplies we will use and are being given the booth space for free.  Each team manning the booth can decide on what they want to do in terms of making art and/or providing art projects for children to participate in.  Limited sales are permissible.
-  On May 10, the Ducky Derby has asked us to have a booth.  They expect a larger crowd this year because there will be one ducky worth $1M.
- There is a question about whether we will participate in Dancing Under the Stars.  It will be an evening event and it is doubtful people coming to dance will want to carry art around with them.

Dix passed around a sheet for members to sign up for refreshments and to provide the program for our monthly meetings.

The Art Students League will host a Summer Art Mart on June 14 & 15.

Dix asked for volunteers to distribute Front Range brochures to local libraries.  The Front Range entries are due July 1 – 15.  The first 110 entries will be accepted.  We have $2000 in scholarship money available so far.

Co-Art Gallery, 846 Santa Fe has an opening for a 3-D artist.

Minutes of the last meeting and the Treasurer's Report, as posted on line, were approved.

Dix announced that she still has a red tablecloth that was loaned for the Christmas Party and which is looking for it's rightful owner.

The current exhibit will be up at the Library through March 12.  We still need some volunteers on the 4 to 7pm shift to help take down the exhibit and help with art pick up.

Dix announced a presentation of "Framing from Front to Back" given by Maureen Phelan in Boulder on Friday, Feb. 22nd.

Members have been finding the Unique Critiques fun and helpful.  The next scheduled ones are:

        Monday March 3, 6:30 PM, at Dix's home;

         Saturday, March 8, 10 - 12 AM at Rosie Lohnert's home,

3-D group Wednesday March 5 at Mimi Platte's home - you must let her know if you are coming                     so she can send your name to the gate house. (Mimi:  303-688-5202 )

Planning has started for the Second Annual Front Range Exhibit.  Dix is  already working with National Arts Program templates and soon will be sending them to NAP to have them produce the brochures for us.  Cloyde Snook  will distribute the brochures to schools to encourage more participation by children.  There will be a maximum of 110 entries this year because the Library will have less display room.  The exhibit will run from October 10 to November 12.  Entries will be due July 1 to 15.  This show is not juried - it is first come, first served.  We will need volunteers to distribute brochures to libraries and other venues.  No email entries this year - everything must be in hard copy.  This means:  3 D artists start creating NOW.....and 2 D artists start making your plans....

CREDCO, an economic development group , is working to expand the Farmers Market which will be held at Festival Park (Perry and 2nd St) on Saturday mornings (9 - 1) from July through October.  We can have a tent there with art to sell, live art being demonstrated, brochures distributed, and opportunities to talk to the public about GCRAG and art.  A number of members expressed interest, so Dix & Rosie wlll attend the planning session to consider ways to expand the program. It will be a good way to support the town, the Farmers Market and the Guild.

The music store at 5th and Wilcox has expanded and is looking for some art for their big empty walls.  Dieter will meet with them and then work with artists.  Make sure that Dieter has pictures of your art if you are interested.  He prefers a CD of an assortment of your works that are available for display.

Tamara announced the Parker Art Guild Spring Art Show March 29 - 30.  She also recommends the book "Working the West" by William Mathews, a Colorado watercolor artist in LODO.

Artists presented their entries for the monthly challenge - "A Tough Challenge met with Joy and Success" or "A Joyous Occasion".  Members voted with 'distributed pennies'.  Congratulations to the winners:

First Place - Sally Crain-Jager - Bits and Pieces of Colorado"

Second Place - Tamara Culp - "Nature of Colorado"

Third Place - Deborah Fuelberth - "Ranch Rodeo"

Lori Beckman thanked the group for their donations to the Humane Society.  The event netted more than $20,000. Lori also reminded everyone of the workshops coming up. If anyone knows someone to give workshops on oils or pastels, please let Lori know.

Doug Wodark gave the program.  He discussed the progress of his career from beginning painter to having work in galleries and going to "tent shows" and the way he has had to change his marketing in response to changes in the times.

Dix called for the traditional Brag-a-Bit where members discussed work accepted into shows, galleries and other achievements.

The next meeting will be March 20 at the library beginning promptly at 6:30.

January 17, 2008

President Dix Morris called the meeting to order at our new meeting venue, the Philip S Miller Library in Castle Rock.

Visitors and new members were introduced.

The minutes and treasurer's report were approved as posted on the web.

Kimberly Brown from Echo Pages Phone Book spoke to the group on using works from local artists on the covers of the Echo Pages books.  She is responsible for seventeen independent yellow pages phone books.  At present she is looking for a photo or painting for the Castle Rock and Parker phone books.  The Parker book always has an equestrian theme.  Members John Dirks and Beth Appleton have had their work published on covers.  There is no monetary award involved, but it does bring notice to the artists and there is a "bio" on the artist in the book.  Slides with a resolution of 300 dpi should be presented for entries.  There are instructions for submitting entries in the front pages of each phone book.

Dix passed out sign-up sheets for volunteers to help with the Fourth Annual Juried Show.  Nadine Partridge has done a fine job of managing the entries, arranging the jury process and norifying the artists. There will be $1000 in prizes - $500 for best in show, $250 first place, $150 second place, $100 third place.

We need volunteers for Monday Jan 28 to accept works between 9:30 - 1:00 and 4:00 - 7:00, Jan 29 & 30 to place the art.  The judging will take place Jan 31 and the Opening Reception will be February 15 and the winners will be announced then.  Volunteers are also needed as hosts and greeters for the reception.  Faye is in charge of refreshments.

We expect about 200 people to attend.  There will be cards for artists to send out and Dix will also send an email version that members can re-send as electronic invitations.  Tamara, Nadine and Dix will work on the program.  Jack Belden will be doing the check-in spread sheets and Fritz Anders is lining up  the Art Cards.

Donna reported that Lone Tree is starting a new show this year which will be held behind Park Meadows on June 21, 22.  There will be 40 spots available, first-come first served, at no charge this year.  The Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce is contributing $10,000. and there are also corporate sponsors.  They plan to have lots of publicity.  Members interested should contact Arthur Flag  FastFrame295@comcast.net.  The show will be outdoors and exhibitors will need to provide their own tents.

Dix reported on the Unique Critique sessions which followed the gruidelines demonstrated at the November meeting..  There was a Saturday group and a Monday evening group.  All those who attended gave positive reports - having learned a lot from the gentle suggestions from the group.  The Saturday group will meet Saturday at Rosie's and thereafter on the 2nd Saturday of each month.  The Monday group will meet on first Mondays.  Sign up with Dix, Rosie and Faye.  Dix will also look into setting up a 3-D critique group since we found that the 2-D guidelines did not apply very well to 3-D works, though the 2-D and 3-D artists did learn from each other.

The mask project entries to support Denver Hospice are due February 1.

The Golden Paint Company is offering some free demos and classes.  Contact Mary Elizabeth Morrison at (303) 863-8175.

A $500 start-up grant is available for a program which would focus on children or seniors.  The theme "Art Creates Healthier Seniors" was discussed.
     - Can take art to Senior Centers to share
     - Studies have shown that art appreciation helps the brain work better.
The usual requirement to go through training to write the grant probably does not apply to this start-up grant.

Julie Woods gave the evening program on the subject of scratch boards.  The scratch boards are usually a white surface with a black covering that can be scratched through to create one's image.

Art Walks. The board, responding to merchant and artist feedback, has decided to concentrate the live art demonstrations and to cut down to one event this summer. The date will be June 14th, the second Saturday in June, probably on the Court House lawn or possibly Festival Park on 2nd street.. We are looking for ways to get people involved with the artists -  perhaps like the Treasure Hunt last time.  Dix needs some one to chair the event and 35 to 40 artists to demonstrate.

Brag a Bit.  Members announced awards, shows, sales and other recognitions for their art.

Challenge theme for next month's meeting will be "Overcoming an obstacle with joyous results"  or "Joyous occasion".

GCRAG and Parker Art Guild are coordinating workshops.  The complete list will be on the web under the Workshops page.

FastFrame of Parker  offers a 'surplus molding' night where you go - select your molding from a large assortment of left-over moldings - take your selections to the counter and tell Arthur the sizes of frames you want them made into......5 X 7 - 8 X 10 - up to some 16 X 20 are possible -  ALL OF THESE FRAMES ARE MADE UP BY Arthur from fine moldings for very reasonable prices - a fraction of what they would cost for full priced moldings.....
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING A 'FRAME NIGHT'  - LET ARTHUR  KNOW SO HE CAN WORK OUT A DATE ........ 303-840-8011  OR   FastFrame295@comcast.net            (Identify yourself as a member of GCRAG)

Dieter is coordinating displays of member art in various local offices.  Send him a CD if you wish your work to be considered.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:15.

Respectfully submitted,

D.Ann Schneider
